Classical Portraiture

One of my aims of the convention this year was to catch as many portraiture sessions as I could. So, what better way to start it off than with the Yerbury Superclass on Portraiture (this followed the Gordon McGowan session)?

So they began with some great marketing and business ideas, followed by images from their recent and past collections, and then moved on to a practical demonstration.

For the actual shooting, they began with a giant softbox then moved over to my favourite light, the Bowens Fresnel. To me, this is a light highly effective in B+W images (see below).

The middle image features a hat designed by the “Rogue Milliner”: a colourful hat designer whose creations are made from roadkill. (You read that last bit correctly, I did say roadkill). His creations were modelled by the lovely Anita De Bauch who is a great model for the Fresnel light.

The best thing about this session is how simple it was. There was no light metering, the lighting took no time to set up and was just so simple. To be honest, you have to go on a course to believe it.

So, moving on to the images. Please note the images below have not been edited to create the soft hazy effect, it was all on camera. Before you try to be clever, this wasn’t created using stockings, but I’m afraid its not my place to tell you how this effect was acheived. I personally like this look a great deal. If you want to find out how to create these images I’d suggest doing this course next year.
