Yerbury Workshop

Training has mass benefits whether it be a mechanic getting a yearly update or a salesman learning the latest sales techniques. This is no different for photographers, but choosing the right course when there are so many available is a difficult challenge but after seeing Trevor and Faye Yerbury at Focus on Imaging at the NEC I felt that with a short one-on-one 20 minute chat I learned more than the past few years about photography and the industry which led me to take the wedding workshop.

To me a good presenter is one that has a passion about what they are doing, they know the industry and likes sharing their knowledge with others, this came across at all times through the day. They say that the average human brain takes in the first 10 minutes of a presentation which is usually reinforced by the presenter by a summary, but in my case at this workshop I took in lots (but I was armed with a video camera, a note book and a DSLR).

Let’s move over to the day;

After a nice night at the Thistle hotel in Glasgow I drove to Loxley Colour to start the day a was presently surprised by the size and appearance of the premises, after a little look round the albums I made my way up to the decent sized conference room which was already half full.

The first part of the day was based around the business of wedding photography and marketing which was very useful and different to what you read in books , more around Trevors ideas how they work for him and other options available. Marketing is highly overlooked by photographers and the ideas of pumping lots of money into magazines shared with 100+other photographers is how most photographers start. A marketing manager friend of mine says that in all her time marketing products she has never once paid for an advert, why because she has a story they want and Trevor had the same philosophy.

Lunch time we were taken round Loxleys premises and shown the process’s they use, it was quite refreshing to see that although they are using hand techniques for almost all of the process they do have some up-to-date CNC machines and a looking at the future of the business.

The final part of the day was the practical, there were more poses than in any book I’ve read, they were also more relevant and the models were  more realistic to an actual wedding day. Another thing that also struck me is that the venue is not what you would typically have at a wedding ( a commercial factory premises) but the images were still great.

All poses are by Trevor & Faye Yerbury http://www.yerburystudio.com/ and I would certainly reccomend this course to any photographer looking at improving your wedding skills.

From the above images from the day I spent about 20 seconds on each to post-process, simple crop, my own personal lightroom presets and a simple vignette
